Retractable glass in high temperature

Fragile glass and flexible rubber are two very different materials, and a bulletin issued by Tokyo Institute of Technology on the 2nd said that its research team has cooperated with the Japan Asahi Glass Central Research Institute to develop a high-temperature environment. Special glass that stretches like rubber. This achievement is expected to expand the use of insulated glass.

Professor of the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Professor Hideo Hideo and the research team led by Inaba Glass Central Research Institute’s Principal Investigator, Inaba, reported that they added lithium to phosphate glass in a new online edition of the British journal Nature Materials. And bismuth, a metaphosphate glass containing a plurality of alkali metal ions is prepared.

This special glass exhibits elastic elasticity in an environment of about 220 to 250 degrees Celsius. In the experiment, the 10 mm long glass rod was extended to 20 mm and was able to return to 12 mm long. If it is an extension ratio of about 35%, the original length can be restored. However, in the room temperature environment, the elongation of the glass will become the same as ordinary glass.

Since the glass does not burn in a high-temperature aerobic environment, it is expected to be used in a high-temperature and oxidizing environment in which organic polymer rubber cannot be applied. For example, in a high temperature environment, the gap of the mechanical joint portion may be filled with such a glass material, or the glass may be used as a shock absorbing material for absorbing impact.
